Natural Flea Remedies For Chihuahuas

There's no denying the fact that fleas can make your Chihuahua's life miserable. At first, you may only see a couple small black spots on your Chihuahua, but unless you treat the problem, they will eventually multiply and spread throughout their body. As you may already know, fleas live by feasting on the blood of mammals, or in this case your Chihuahua. When they bite into your Chihuahua's skin, it will generally cause itching, irritation and sometimes even lead to infection. Thankfully, however, there are some natural remedies to treat and prevent fleas from attacking your Chihuahua

  • While the exact number is unknown, there is believed to be over 200 species of fleas in the U.S.
  • A single flea can bite your Chihuahua several hundred times throughout the day.

Now that you know a little bit about these horrific parasites, you're probably eager to learn ways to get rid of them. While there are a number of chemical treatments and medications available on the market, you should first try less-evasive methods. Chihuahuas are simply too small for a lot of the flea medications, and while they may effectively get rid of their fleas, they can also make them ill.

Flea Comb

As the name suggests, flea combs are designed to catch fleas and their eggs simply by running it through your Chihuahuas coat. You can find these available for sale at most pet stores for around $5-$10 bucks, which is a steal considering how effective they are. Before you start, you should fill up a disposable cup with warm water and add a bit of dish soap to it. Now, take the comb and slowly run it through their coat, working from their head to their tail. Check the comb periodically and dip it into the cup filled with soapy water when you see fleas on it, as this will prevent you from moving them to another area on your Chihuahua. Continue doing this until you no longer find fleas stuck on your comb after pulling it through their coat.

Vinegar For FleasApple Cider Vinegar

Would you have guessed that apple cider vinegar can be used to kill and prevent fleas? Yep, if your Chihuahua is suffering from fleas, try adding a tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar to their water bowl. After drinking it, the apple cider vinegar should make their skin more acidic, which naturally turns away fleas. Alternatively, you can create a mixture of 1 part apple cider vinegar and 3 parts water in spray bottle and spray your Chihuahua's coat down with it. The high acidity of the vinegar will literally eat away at the fleas. Just remember to avoid spraying it in your Chihuahua's eyes, as it can be quite painful.

It should go without saying that giving your Chihuahua frequent baths is also an effective way to naturally remove their fleas. Just pick up some mild dog shampoo that's formulated for Chihuahuas or other small canines and thoroughly lather it into their coat. Allow it to sit for at least 3-5 minutes for it to effectively kill the fleas before rinsing it off your Chihuahua.
